Supplemental Security Income - Social Security Administration
The Social Security Administration wants people to know they can still apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), even while Social Security offices are closed to in-person interviews onsite.
SSI provides monthly payments to adults and children with a disability or blindness who have income and resources below specified amounts. People 65 and older, who are without disabilities but who meet the financial limits, can also receive SSI payments. Generally, an individual can only have $2,000 in resources and a couple $3,000. However, we may not count all income and resources when we decide if someone can get SSI.
We continue to take applications by telephone. You can use our Social Security Office Locator to find your local office phone number, or you can call our national toll-free number (1-800-772-1213). People with hearing issues can call our TTY/TDD number (1-800-325-0778).
For disability claims, you can provide required information online. Please visit www.ssa.gov/benefits/ssi/ to learn how to apply for an adult or a child, and how to appeal if an SSI application was denied.
